On the Rocky Roads of History

I´m Finnish historian, born 1970 and raised in Kitee, a small town located near Russian border. I worked as researcher and teacher at the University of Jyväskylä, Central Finland, for the most of time between years 1996 – 2017 (2020-2021). I have been nominated as docent (”adjunct professor”) twice (University of Jyväskylä 2005 and University of Eastern Finland, Joensuu 2008). Invited member of Finnish Historical Society I have been since 2005.

I´ve published five books. My dissertation ”Verenperijät” (Recovering Blood: Violence and Community in the Age of Transition, 2002) analysed violent crime in Early Modern Finland. After finishing PhD, I went on to study post-war Finnish university students in ”Akateemisia kansalaisia ja maakunnan toivoja” (Academic Citizens and Hopes of Provinces, 2005). In 2017 I published ”Kivikkopellon poika” ("Son of the Rocky Fields”), a biography of Erkki Laatikainen (1946 – 2013), a high-profile newspaper editor and controversial Finnish journalist.”Tiikeri 94” (Tiger 94, 2020), is a biography of Artturi Nyyssönen (1892 – 1973). Jyväskylä-based Nyyssönen made, among his many other activities, a remarkable career as a military doctor during the war (1939 – 1944). ”Kuningas Auto” (King Automobile, 2024) discusses, how private car and traffic became political questions in Finland during the decades after the war (1945 – 1980).

These books, as most of my articles, are published in Finnish, but some fruits of my work are available in English (and there is one text available even in German!). I welcome all contacts, in particular those connected to the research interests described above.
